The Last Man
Dark very short story
I SAT ALONE in a room. There was no one else in the world. I had been alone for years, ever since the virus had wiped out humanity. I watched as my friends and family died, one by one. I had seen the world crumble around me.
Now, I was the last man on Earth. I think so.
I didn't know how long I would last. I was running out of food and water. The power was out, and the temperature was dropping. I was cold hungry, and scared.
But I knew I had to keep going. I had to find a way to survive.
I wandered through the empty streets, looking for anything to help me. I found cans of food, some bottled water, and a few blankets.
I found a small house that was still standing. I went inside and made myself a nest in the living room. I gathered all the blankets and piled them on top of me. I was so cold.
I closed my eyes and tried to sleep. But I couldn't. I kept thinking about all the people who were gone. I kept thinking about the world before destruction.
I finally drifted off to sleep, but my dreams tanked to nightmares. I dreamed of the virus, dead bodies, and empty streets.
I woke up in the morning, still cold and hungry. I knew I had to find a way to get food and water. I had to find a way to survive.
I left the house and started walking. I didn't know where I was going but I knew I had to keep moving.
I walked for hours until I came to a river. I drank my fill of water and then rested on the bank.
As I sat there, I looked around at the river. It was so peaceful. The water was flowing gently, and the sun was shining.
For a moment, I forgot about all the bad things that had happened. I forgot about the virus, the dead bodies, and the empty streets.
I just sat there, enjoying the peace.
I knew it wouldn't last. I knew I would have to keep moving. But I was content to sit there and be at peace now.
Thoughts struck me; sledgehammers buzzed around my head. Questions battered my brain. Why did I have to keep moving? And after ages of drinking bottled water, why, oh why, did I drink from a poisoned river?
